Andy Townsend has named the man he thinks should replace Arsene Wenger at Arsenal. |
Wenger has come under mounting pressure at Arsenal because of a failure to challenge for the Premier League title in recent years.
The Gunners put in a lacklustre performance during the 3-0 Carabao Cup final defeat to Manchester City on Sunday.
And that proved to be the final straw for supporters and pundits alike and they now demand Wenger’s 22-year reign comes to an end.
Former Liverpool defender Townsend thinks that the north London outfit should go in a different direction when they part ways with the Frenchman.
And he has named Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone as the ideal replacement.
“I think it would need a change of tack and a change of mentality,” Townsend told Sky Sports’ The Debate.
“I know that Thierry [Henry] is an interested observer and Patrick Vieira.
“Guys like that are legendary Arsenal players and figures but I would go in another direction.“I would go for somebody on the outside to bring in their ideas.
“I would trust their ideas.
“I don’t think you’d get a Diego Simeone but that is a flip to me that would shake the club up.
“He is a passionate animal that really wants to get his teeth into everything going on.
“It would be different but the players look like they need some new energy.”
