Over 100 Refugees From Dr Congo Cross Border Into Uganda

KAMPALA, Feb 12 (BERNAMA-NNN-NEW VISION) -- More than 100 refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have crossed the border into Zombo district in northwestern Uganda following an outbreak of tribal clashes in that neighbouring country, reports reaching here say.

The clashes between members of the Lendu and Bagegere tribes in the areas of Muvaramu, Gobu and Jo in Bunia district in the DRC were sparked off in

mid-December last year, forcing thousands, mostly women, children and the elderly, to flee to Uganda.

John Urwiny, the Zombo district chairperson, told New Vision that the latest batch of refugees started arriving Sunday morning. \"We received over 100 refugees from DR Congo, and more are on the way,\" he added Sunday.

He said the refugees entered the country through the porous border at Padei in Abanga sub-county. Urwiny said most of the refugees are being housed at the town council hall, while others have scattered within the host community.

According to Urwiny, some of the refugees are being hosted by their relatives in the district. Efforts are being made to ensure that all refugees who are with their relatives are vetted and registered, he added.

A crisis security meeting will be held on Monday to discuss how to cope with the challenge posed by the influx.
